Brooklyn Serial Case: How the police almost let a killer get away.

Now it’s been a while since ‘serial killer’ has been splashed across TVs and newspapers in America but this past week one was arrested in Brooklyn, NY. According to the son of one of the victims this arrest should have happened earlier.

The accused killer, 66 year old Kevin Gavin lived in the same buildings as his victims. All three of whom were elderly women. The killings began in 2015 and ended in 2021. All three killings were extremely violent in nature: a stabbing to the neck, strangulation and then another strangulation by telephone cord. But what makes that all the more disturbing is that he would befriend the women and run errands for them.

But why was he not a suspect to begin with? Well a family member of one of his victims says he should have been. One of the victims 82 year old Myrtle McKinney was not even given an autopsy by the city. This woman was stabbed in the neck but no one felt the need to preform the most basic of forensic measures and autopsy her body for clues. In the case of Lewis’s mother police had determined her death was of natural causes. Apparently strangulation is a new natural way to die.

The worst part is the two later slayings could have been avoided, as Gavin’s name had come up in investigations but the police said they didn’t have enough to follow up. Another tragedy of the system not doing its job to protect the most vulnerable.
